PostHeaderIcon Biometrics to boom by 2012

The global biometrics industry is set to triple in size by 2012, according to an article published today.

The growth will be supported by government identity management schemes, criminal and surveillance systems and private sector initiatives.

The worldwide market value could surpass $7 billion.

Fingerprint biometrics will spearhead growth, followed by facial and iris recognition technologies, with Asia and the Middle East marked down as the key growth areas.

Biometric technologies that will be displayed at Intersec trade fair and conference include areas such as fingerprint scan, face recognition, automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS), live-scan, iris recognition, middleware/biometric identity management software, vein recognition, multiple-biometric, hand geometry and voice recognition.

ccording to new research from Siemens IT Solutions and Services, only 18% of organisations with biometric measures currently in place are using them for logical access control – vital to securing IT equipment and data files.

Despite acknowledging the need for greater IT security in a climate of cyber crime and terrorism, biometrics professionals are opting for physical access control to safeguard rooms or buildings. This presents IT security threats to sensitive data within organisations and potential mobile IT security weaknesses.

Physical access controls to offices or floors via fingerprint, iris and palm vein biometric identification controls offer a layer of protection to sensitive data inside the organisation. However laptops, portable hard drives or other mobile computing devices are left open to security threats.

The majority of research respondents (65%) including local and central government, defence and financial services organisations cite a greater level of security as the key advantage to implementing a biometric security system. A secondary rationale is to eliminate lost or forgotten passwords (18%).

“Following the proliferation of mobile IT devices over the last decade and high profile incidents of data loss and theft, a number of organisations are still to address the security of actual IT devices and data protection,” states Ian Collard, Identity Management and Biometrics Manager at Siemens IT Solutions and Services. “Frontline building security gives good safeguards to walk in threats but should be complemented with IT infrastructure security measures to prevent access to sensitive data and files.”

The research also highlights that companies and government departments yet to implement biometric security measures cite perceived cost (26%) and low evidence of reliability (24%) as prohibitive take up factors. However a quarter of respondents (24%) were currently putting together business cases that will lead to set up in the near future.

“Biometrics may be perceived as innovative and thus costly but this is not the case, indeed business cases show a rapid payback on initial investment,” continues Ian Collard, Identity Management and Biometrics Manager at Siemens IT Solutions and Services. “IT helpdesks often observe that the most common reason for user calls is password resets – a task which has been calculated to cost an organisation upwards of £70 a time, when all the human and process stages have been taken into account. By implementing innovative user identification using biometric fingerprint, palm-vein or even voice recognition, costs can be halved, pressure on the helpdesk reduced and organisational efficiencies gained. Biometrics technology is a crucial tool in today’s business armoury.”

In comparison to other security measures such as passwords and PINs, the theft or forgery of unique biometric characteristics such as palm vein, iris, voice, fingerprint or face is significantly more difficult. This makes it a robust and secure route to protecting infrastructure, data and property.

A leading consultant has recommended the use of biometrics in improving business security, according to Emirates Business 24/7.

Liaquat Parkar, managing consultant of the business services company Logica, said: "Using biometrics to access physical buildings and computer networks will ensure companies that their assets and internal data are secured."

Mr Parkar pointed out that biometric recognition systems could help banks in cases of credit card cloning and bank fraud, suggesting that fingerprint scanners might be used to authenticate people trying to withdraw money.

The use of biometric locks in business security has become increasingly commonplace around the world, according to Emirates Business 24/7.

New biometric recognition systems are being developed, such as the gait recognition system designed by a University of Southampton research team.

Biometric fingerprint scanning technology is now being launched by Crystal IT as it says many companies can no longer afford to leave security issues down to employees.

According to Market watch, the Avert-Access Control system automatically locks computer systems which can then only be accessed by an authorised biometric fingerprint scan.

It is hoped this could eliminate important or confidential information from falling into the wrong hands.

"This product comes at a crucial time as data compromise is surging with no end or effective solution in sight," says Johl Kennedy, chief technology officer at Crystal IT.

He added that the product has "redefined how organisations should evaluate IT security".

The system is recommended for the healthcare, education, finance, business and government industries.

Biotmetrics can also be used for home security in the form of fingerprint locking systems which are secure and simple to use.

PostHeaderIcon Biometrics 'could overtake national ID cards'

The government's plans to introduce ID cards for the population may soon be redundant as biometric security solutions are likely to take over, it has been claimed.

ZDNet has reported on a warning from BT chief security officer Bruce Schneier, who says that the current identity plans are likely to be temporary.

This is because facial recognition technology and ID checks will be happening at airports without passengers even realising, he suggests.

Mr Schneier said: "When you walk into the airport they will know who you are. You won't have to show an ID – why bother? They can process you quicker."

The website also suggests that although national use of biometrics may be a long way off yet, many companies are already using them as security solutions in their offices.

Not only are biometrics suitable for business, they can also be used for home security in the form of Fingerprint locks.
