Biometrics used in new 3-D facial scanning security solution
Academics in the UK have developed a new biometric security system which can recognise people's faces.
Researchers at the University of Hertfordshire have applied multimedia technology to come up with the 3-D face imaging tool.
If used in a real-world environment, it should be able to capture details of the faces of anyone who is walking past its scanners.
Therefore, it could be highly useful in a high security zone, particularly as it can see through obstructions such as wigs and make-up.
Dr Sooda Ramalingham, one of the researchers behind the technology, believes it has many potential commercial applications.
She commented: "Our new 3-D vision system goes beyond the skin and is equivalent to measuring the bone structure."
"As people stand at border control, detailed images can be taken and processed immediately.”
She added that the new system is much faster than any other existing biometric security systems.
Biometrics are also used for Fingerprint locks, which can be useful for both business and home security.
