BBC discusses use of biometrics
The use of biometrics as a security solution has been assessed by the BBC after recent incidents involving the loss of data held on laptops and other computer equipment.
According to the broadcaster's website, the way a person walks is now becoming a more subtle method in biometrics to identify people and the University of Southampton has recently won funding to establish further research into this area.
Professor Mark Nixon, head of the Gait Research Group at Southampton, describes how a human body silhouette and measurements are established from pictures.
"We also get a set of measurements which describe the movement, and together, those are used to recognise the person," he said.
However, fingerprint scanning technology is still the most popular use of biometrics and it has been reported by the BBC that some banks are now looking into this security method to make sure cash machines are online banking systems are secure.
For home security, biometrics can be used in the form of fingerprint locks which can be an alternative to having lots of keys.
